Early Life

Khan was born in New Delhi on November 2, 1965, to a Muslim household. In the 1960s, his maternal grandfather, Ifthikar Ahmed, was the head engineer of the port in Mangalore, where he spent his first five years of existence. Khan’s paternal grandpa, Meer Jan Muhammad Khan, was born in Afghanistan, according to Khan. Meer Taj Mohammed Khan, Khan’s father, was an Indian independence leader from Peshawar (now Pakistan), who worked alongside the Khudai Khidmatgar, a Pashtun nonviolent resistance movement led by Abdul Ghaffar Khan (also known as Badshah Khan or the “Frontier Gandhi”), for the construction of a united and independent India. Meer was an Indian National Congress member and a supporter of Abdul Ghaffar Khan. Khan’s paternal family lived in Peshawar’s Qissa Khwani Bazaar’s Shah Wali Qataal district as of 2010. They speak Hindko and claim to be Kashmiri natives. Following India’s partition in 1948, Meer relocated to New Delhi. Lateef Fatima Khan, Khan’s mother, was the daughter of a senior government engineer. In 1959, his parents married. “Half Hyderabadi (mother), half Pathan (father), and some Kashmiri (paternal grandma),” Khan wrote on Twitter.

Career

Khan’s first lead part was in Lekh Tandon’s television series Dil Dariya, which began filming in 1988, but due to production delays, he made his television debut instead in Raj Kumar Kapoor’s 1989 series Fauji. He played Abhimanyu Rai in the series, which provided a realistic look at army cadet training. Further appearances in Aziz Mirza’s television series Circus (1989–90) and Mani Kaul’s miniseries Idiot followed (1991). Khan also had minor roles in the Hindi television serials Umeed (1989) and Wagle Ki Duniya (1988–90), as well as the English-language television film In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones (1989). His appearances in these serials drew comparisons to film star Dilip Kumar’s appearance and acting style, but Khan was not interested in film acting at the time, believing he was not good enough.

Khan changed his mind about acting in movies in April 1991, claiming that it was a method for him to cope with the sadness of his mother’s death. He relocated from Delhi to Mumbai in order to pursue a full-time career in Bollywood, and he was promptly cast in four films. His first job offer was for Hema Malini’s directorial debut Dil Aashna Hai, and he began filming in June. Deewana, which was released in June 1992, was his first picture. He played the second male lead in the film, following Rishi Kapoor, with Divya BhartiKhan won the Filmfare Best Male Debut Award for his performance in Deewana, which became a box office blockbuster and launched his Bollywood career. Khan’s debut films as a male protagonist, Chamatkar, Dil Aashna Hai, and the comedy Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, which was the first of many collaborations with actress Juhi Chawla, were also released in 1992. In his early film performances, he portrayed people that were full of energy and passion. Khan, according to Arnab Ray of Daily News and Analysis, “brought to the screen the kind of physical energy he was sliding downstairs on a sheet of ice, cartwheeling, somersaulting, lips trembling, eyes quivering, bringing to the screen the kind of physical energy he was bringing to the screen the kind of physical energy he was bringing to the screen the kind of physical energy he was bringing to the screen the kind of physical energy violent, ferocious, and maniacal
